Bringing Home the Gama Goat: Six Months Later, It’s Finally Ours

There are vehicles you buy… and then there are vehicles you chase.

This one took six months.

Back and forth. Waiting. Timing. Making sure it was the right move. And now it’s finally sitting here at the ranch. A fully functional, street legal Gama Goat that feels less like a purchase and more like we just acquired a piece of living history.

What makes this thing different

The Gama Goat was never meant to be pretty or comfortable. It was built to solve a problem. The U.S. military needed something that could move people and equipment through terrain that would stop just about anything else. Deep mud, uneven jungle floors, water crossings. This was the answer.

What you notice immediately is how unusual it looks. It’s not one solid vehicle. It’s two halves connected by a pivot. That articulation is what lets it crawl over obstacles while keeping all six wheels working. Watching it move is half the experience. It bends and flexes in a way that doesn’t feel real until you see it in person.

It’s powered by a Detroit Diesel engine and it sounds exactly like you’d expect. Loud, mechanical, unapologetic. No computers smoothing anything out. Just raw function.

Street legal, which makes it even better

This isn’t just something that sits in a barn.

It’s already street legal.

That changes everything.

We’re not just looking at it or restoring it. We can actually drive it. Take it out. Let people see it. Hear it. Experience it the way it was meant to be experienced. There’s something different about rolling something like this down a normal road. It doesn’t blend in. It doesn’t try to.

All we’ve got left is getting it registered and throwing a plate on it. After that, it’s fair game.

Why this one matters

There’s no shortage of classic cars out there. Plenty of builds, plenty of restorations. But something like this hits different.

This is Cold War era engineering that was built with one goal in mind. Get through anything.

No fluff. No extra. Just capability.

And the fact that it’s still here, still running, and now sitting at our place ready for its next chapter… that’s what makes it worth the wait.

What’s next

We didn’t bring this in to let it sit.

We’re going to run it. Test it. Put it in the kind of environments it was built for. And yeah, probably take it places it was never expected to go either.

There’s also something to be said for preserving it the right way. Keeping the character, the sound, the feel. Not overbuilding it into something it was never meant to be.

Just bringing it back to life and letting it do what it was designed to do.

At Hot Rod Donkey Ranch, we’ve always believed every forgotten project car deserves a second chance, a place where old steel gets new life, creativity meets craftsmanship, and the rumble of a revived engine means another success story. This year, we finally built the space worthy of those rescues: our brand-new, hurricane-rated Hot Rod Barn.

And yes… Pancho and Cisco supervised every step.

Seven Truckloads of Concrete (Because We Don’t Do Anything Halfway)

When we build something on the ranch, we build it to last. The foundation alone took seven full truckloads of concrete , creating a rock-solid base ready to support our growing fleet of hot rods, drag builds, restoration projects, and the occasional “what even is that?” rolling chassis we drag home.

The slab is engineered to handle heavy equipment and all the rest of our beasts.

Built for Florida Weather… and Florida Heat

The barn is fully hurricane-rated , built with reinforced framing and engineered roofing to protect every project during storm season. While the walls are open, the roof is fully insulated, helping keep temperatures more manageable during scorching Florida summers and giving us a cooler workspace when the humidity tries to melt you.

It’s not air-conditioning — but in Florida, every degree of heat you can keep out matters.

A Structure Built for Storage and Hot Rod Rescue Projects

This barn isn’t a mechanic shop with lifts — it’s a purpose-built storage and staging space for our growing collection of hot-rod rescue projects.

Main building: 40' wide x 50' deep
Side lean-tos: Two 15' covered wings for additional covered parking, parts storage, and shade
Ceiling height: 20 feet , giving us plenty of vertical breathing room for taller vehicles, trailers, and future organizational space

With its size and layout, the barn gives us room to safely store new project acquisitions, organize parts, protect vehicles from Florida weather, and keep every rescue ready for the day it moves into the build queue.

Meet Pancho & Cisco: The Nosy Miniature Mascots of Hot Rod Donkey Ranch

At Hot Rod Donkey Ranch, we don’t just build custom hot rods and transform race machines into street-legal beasts — we also share the property with two of the most unexpected shop supervisors you’ll ever meet.

Pancho and Cisco, our resident miniature donkeys, came with the ranch long before we ever turned a wrench on this land. They’re about six years old, stubborn in all the right ways, and living proof that sometimes you don’t own a donkey — the donkey owns you.

But honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way.

Two Donkeys, One Ranch, Zero Personal Space

Pancho and Cisco have made it clear: if you’re working on a project anywhere on the property, they need to know about it.

Whether we’re bending metal, rebuilding a carb, or fine-tuning a street-legal setup, these two wander right over like inspectors on shift. You’ll often find them sticking their noses into toolboxes, sniffing new parts, or standing silently behind you like they’re offering moral support....or judging your torque specs.

A freshly groomed donkey lasts about three minutes. They roll like they’re auditioning for a dust-themed commercial.

Every evening, as the sun drops behind the trees, Pancho and Cisco join us for “happy hour.” Donkeys don’t drink wine, of course..... but they absolutely enjoy standing nearby while we do, soaking in the breeze, the quiet, and the end of another day on the ranch.

It’s become a ritual: hot rods cooling down in the shop, donkeys chilling in the yard, and that golden light that makes everything look like a country-living magazine cover… except with more grease, tools, and donkey hair.

Cisco, for reasons known only to the animal kingdom, has a tiny white bird that’s basically claimed him as its personal ride.
It never hangs out with Pancho — only Cisco. It follows him around the property, perches nearby, and sometimes even rides on his back like they’re starring in some ranch-themed buddy movie.

At this point, we’re convinced they’ve formed a cross-species friendship pact. Cisco pretends not to notice… but he totally loves the attention.

Held on the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links, the Concours offers a stage as breathtaking as its performers: hundred-million-dollar coachbuilt icons, race winners with storied pasts, and impossibly rare prototypes that have transcended utility to become pure art. The crowd is as glamorous as the machinery – enthusiastic financiers, designers, racers, and celebrities make their annual pilgrimage to the Monterey coastline to join like-minded enthusiasts from all walks of life creating community.

But, with prestige comes pressure: six-hundred-dollar tickets, traffic jams stretching for miles, and throngs of enthusiasts eager for a glimpse. Yet, quietly, there exists another way, a softer, more rarefied entry point. It’s whispered about more than it’s advertised, and it begins not with a grand arrival at midday, but with a gathering in the dark, long before dawn.

This is Dawn Patrol.

It isn’t official, and that’s precisely its allure. Long before the Concours opens at 10:30 am, a select group, true devotees, slip onto the grounds between 4:30 and 5:00 am. With the ocean breeze still cool and the stars clinging faintly to the sky, they line the entry path. One by one, the world’s most exquisite automobiles arrive, headlights glowing through the mist, exhaust notes rolling like thunder against the cliffs. For this moment, Pebble Beach feels private, almost secret.

The experience carries its own rituals. Complimentary coffee and donuts greet the early risers, though the real prize is the elusive Dawn Patrol hat, handed out to a lucky few and coveted like a trophy. Watching otherwise impeccably dressed collectors scramble for a cap is a spectacle in itself.

I went to the Penske Racing Museum to do what every gearhead does first—photograph the cars. The gallery below is all vehicles: Indy legends, stock-car bruisers, and immaculate restorations that show exactly why “Penske Perfect” is a thing.

What the photos don’t show—but absolutely adds to the experience—is everything around the cars: trophies stacked like skyscrapers, period-correct helmets and suits, pit-lane gear, vintage signage, and displays that walk you through how preparation wins races. Even if you’re there for the machinery, don’t skip the memorabilia—it quietly tells the “how” behind the wins.

What surprised me

The hardware : trophy cases and medals that make the results feel real.
Human touch : driver suits, helmets, and team gear that put people back into the story.
Tools of the trade : wheels/tires with run notes, pit equipment, and setup boards—little clues to race-day decisions.
Story boards : placards and timelines that trace the culture and standards behind the speed.

Best in Low: A Photo Tour at the Petersen

I visited the Petersen Automotive Museum for its landmark lowrider exhibition, Best in Low: Lowrider Icons of the Street & Show —and I shot the cars the way lowriders deserve to be seen: low angles, tight on details, and honest about the craftsmanship. The gallery below is all vehicles from the exhibit, but the space itself told a bigger story—one about culture, community, and a standard of finish that borders on jewelry.

Even if you’re here strictly for chrome and paint, Best in Low made it impossible to ignore the art and engineering behind the stance: engraved metalwork, mirror-finished underbodies, intricate hydraulics, pinstriping, silver leaf, leatherwork—the works. The curation placed street legends beside show winners, tracing techniques and regional influences from Southern California to New Mexico, Texas, and even Japan.

We went to the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar, California to do what gearheads do first—photograph the cars. The gallery below is all vehicles: concours-level restorations and coachbuilt icons that explain why the Nethercutt name carries serious weight on the show field.

Even if you’re here strictly for chrome and coachwork, the museum experience goes beyond sheetmetal. The Music Room showcases a world-class lineup of mechanical instruments—reproducing pianos, orchestrions, and a mighty Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ—and they actually demonstrate them during tours. It’s part gallery, part concert, and it adds a surprising soundtrack to all that polished nickel.

A quick bit of context: the Collection was founded by cosmetics magnate J.B. Nethercutt (Merle Norman family), and its cars have collected serious silverware—think Pebble Beach class wins and specials like the famed “Twenty Grand” Duesenberg SJ . That standard of finish shows in person.
